About Us

Votoka is an Angolan Not-For-Profit Association dedicated to improving access for all Angolans to the conditions necessary for a full and satisfying life, with a particular focus on supporting women. In the Umbundu language of central Angola, “Votoka” means “Rise up”. The objective of this foundation is to help people and communities rise up, be empowered, and change their lives for the better.

Votoka was established in 2022, and the Angolan government, through its public organ Diário de República, formally conferred not-for-profit status  to Votoka in February 2024. However the vision for this association, and the work of the projects run by this association, began long before that!

The Obstetric Fistula program has been effective in Huambo province since 2021 under the current team members of Votoka, although without the formal organisation of an association. The Community Development program has been run voluntarily by Tavares Chimbili since 2013, with a growth from individual projects to on-going programs.

The founding members of Votoka were inspired by Dutch development worker Petra Jobse, and her dedication to Angolans, particularly women suffering from Obstetric Fistula.

Vision

A world in which each individual has access to the conditions necessary for a full, healthy, just, happy and productive life.
