Amazing August in the Community Development Program (Part 1)

This last month the Community Development program continued its regular ParkRun events as well as the first ever school holiday program at Nganja Park with an Introduction to Art Education Week and a Handwriting Course. We want to empower and engage the youth in our community by providing opportunities and experiences that enrich their lives and broaden their awareness.

Art Education Week

At Nganja Park an Art Education Week was held from the 9th to the 13th of August. Professional artist and art teacher Imaculada Tchitanga (https://web.facebook.com/imaculada.tchitanga) travelled from Luanda to Bailundo to volunteer her time, with the support of Luanda-based school teacher Nvuka Massaki who also volunteered his time. Imaculada taught 2 sessions each day, one for children and youths from the town of Bailundo, and one for children and youths from the community of Nganja. She began with teaching basic art concepts: colours (primary and secondary), values, and tones. Then she moved on to instructing the students on how to create “warm” and “cool” paintings. Finally, the week culminated in the students creating their own designs. It was an amazing opportunity for the young people, most of whom had never illustrated with paint before! Votoka provided support for some of the materials used in the lessons. We are incredibly grateful for the spirit of volunteerism that Imaculada and Nvuka demonstrate and look forward to future opportunities for collaboration. Art is a balm for the soul and should not be neglected in social programs!
